Why is my Golf so slow?

I own a Volkswagen Gold MkIV. The car performs ok on flat roads, but struggles to climb hills. It's almost impossible to do over 50mph uphill (which can be embarrassing), but will achieve 80mph on the flat.

The local garage plugged in the computer, but nothing registered - I guess it's only worth £800 now (115k miles). Is there any other problems I can look for?

First thing, remove the air filter and see if it makes any difference. If it does, replace the air filter with a new one. If it doesn't, the oxidising cat converter matrix has probably broken up and is blocking the exhaust system.
