Complimentary insurance problems

I bought a used car from main Jaguar dealer and was told I had seven days complimentary insurance. However, following an accident, I have found that the salesman never set up the insurance. I have also been told I am liable for the damage to my new car and the third party, do I have any comeback?

The dealer is denying any liability, saying it was down to me to arrange it. They did not take any details from me (even for the test drive) and I admit I was naive, but had never been offered this when buying a car before. What can I do?

Legally, you are 100% liable. To shift any liability at all onto the dealer you would need to prove that he offered 7 days complimentary insurance. This could have been the dealer's own 'any car, any driver' insurance for customers. It later turned out that Jaguar advertises an offer of 7 days complementary insurance on new and used cars and that the dealer may not have completed the necessary paperwork.
