Need a car for the country - what do you recommend for £12k?

I need a car that I can use to make house calls at farms. The vehicle will need to negotiate muddy tracks and snow in the winter, as well as transport two active boys around the city and their friends. I have £12,000 to spend. Would a two-wheel drive car with winter tyres and high clearance be better than a 4x4 SUV?

A Peugeot 2008 or 3008 with 'Grip Control' would do the job. More likely to find a used 3008 with 'Grip Control" than a 2008.
