Good second hand buy?

Your latest email news letter indicated that you consider the Skoda Yeti to be a good cross over vehicle but under the good / bad icon there is long list of items to watch out for. I am actively considering a 1.2 TSI 105 may be 18 months to 2 years old---do I need to be concerned about any of the points raised? The engine design appears to have changed for a chain driven cam to belt whereas I thought a chain cam was preferred. Please advise.

Thanks

It's very popular, which is what the HJ awards are about, but it hasn't been any more reliable than other VAG cars. You're right about the change from chain to belt in the new EA211 VAG 1.2 and 1.4TSI. VG was having trouble with timing chains, I think because of its longlife service regime (that isn't actually good for any engine). When cars that drove well initially prove to be spectacularly unreliable they are demoted in our star system.
