Why is my Skoda Fabia's engine management warning light coming on?
I have had problems with my Skoda Fabia Comfort 1.2 64bhp which is a 2004 Reg. I have an electrical issue and a bodywork issue. It all started in late 2009 when I was driving home on a long journey (two hours by this point!) and my car came up with the engine fault light. I'd been travelling at my normal speed of 70-80 mph for one hour. My car then decided it was going to nearly conk out on me in the overtaking lane, so I pulled over into the hard shoulder. I figured that I'll try turning my car ignition on and off and the light went out, so I thought nothing of it. Then the EPC light started to come on and off. This has been happening for the past year or more, and for the past three weeks it's been on solidly and I just don't know what to do. If it is a small issue I can always get someone to fix it for me, but if it's a major issue I'm going to scream.
I have had a back brake issue with my car since early 2009 and the only way I can describe it is that it sticks and won't release without much force. When this "sticking" happens, I'm there for up to 30 mins trying to free it. The handbrake is off and have pushed it back and forth into first and reverse. I even had the breakdown guy out to free it. I've taken it to two very reliable garages in different parts of the country who have said "it's the dust that's been collecting which is making them stick, so we've cleaned them for you and it shouldn't be a problem".
As soon as it comes free, initially it starts to sound like it's grinding, both when turning the steering wheel and braking. Now I'm getting worried about this heap of metal as to how reliable it really is - it's only done 58,000 miles and now it's got problems. I have to do long journeys every weekend so my car is my diamond for getting around. Please please could someone help me out?

If the engine management light comes on when you're driving, the handbook will advise that you should stop driving it immediately and get it to an authorised garage who will be able to diagnose the problem. Driving with any warning light on is only going to damage your engine - that's precisely why they are warning lights. In terms of your brake problem, you need to take it to a Skoda garage who will be able to help you sort it once and for all, as it sounds a very unusual problems.
