Black smoke from a 307 diesel?

My wife has a 2005 Peugeot 307 1.6 HDI that has a diesel knock and blows black smoke on starting. It gets worse then better, occasionally running well then starting to smoke again.

Turbo oil seal failure, valve stem seal failure or a failed injector.
