Is the 2001-onward Renault Laguna an unreliable car?
I have and enjoy a 2000 Laguna Alize 1.6 16 valve. It's reliable and runs well, but is showing first signs of age. I am looking at a 2005 Laguna Extreme 2.0 16 valve as a replacement, but Which? refers to lots of technical problems with the 2001-2007 Lagunas which is a bit off-putting. Although it scored four stars in almost all categories it only scored one star for reliability. What is not clear is whether the technical problems were those of a new model of car in 2001 which were subsequently addressed by the manufacturer, or whether they were problems which remained throughout the production run. Can you help?

The Laguna II from 2001 was dogged by reliability problems and we'd usually advise against buying one unless it has a full service history and low miles. While these issues were highlighted early on there were still reports of the same problems late in the car's life. You're likely to be better off with as late a plate car as possible, but we'd suggest a more reliable alternative such as a Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord.
