2002 Golf with some odd electrical gremlins

When driving the rev counter drops to zero and the red oil light flashes though engine still running. Checked oil levels which are ok. After switching off and starting again its ok until driven about 500 yards and then rev counter drops to zero and oil light flashes but with the engine still running.

When German cars start to get older they start to suffer quite a lot of minor electrical failures. Don't worry too much about the rev counter. But do go to a specialist and get the oil pressure checked. If it is starting to lose pressure then the oil pump could be on the way out and if the oil pump fails, oil will not be pumped through the engine and the engine will fail.
