Should Toyota cover the cost of repairing my 8-year-old Avensis Verso?

I own a 2002 Avensis Verso. Recently my car appears to have developed the following problem: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/toyota/avensis-verso-2001/?section=bad

Should Toyota cover any of the cost of sorting this out for me? So far they are refusing, saying the car is out of warranty.
