Best estate for £12k?

I have up to £12000 to spend on a large estate for camping trips. Because it will not be used every day, I have a Kangoo Diesel Van for every day use, I am not over concerned about fuel consumption costs.

My main priorities are reliability and long distance comfort. The average mileage will be about 5000 all in long journeys. Should I treat myself to the Subaru Legacy/Outback 3.0-litre petrol model or be prudent and buy a diesel?

That Subaru 3.0 litre engine offers a great drive. You might be smitten.
