What could I replace my 15-year-old Volkswagen Polo with?

Having recently sold my trusty 15-year-old Polo, I'm looking to replace it with something similar in size. I only do about 1000 miles pa and the car is used for shopping, local trips and the occasional 40-minute motorway journey. I have looked into various car sharing schemes, but I live in Ruislip, just on the outskirts of London, where these schemes have yet to take off. I want to spend about £4000 for a small (3- or 5-door) reliable and economical car and I have no idea what there is out there. I know that it would be expensive to replace the Polo with a similar Volkswagen model. Any advice would be welcome.

Citroen C1, Peugeot 107, Toyota Aygo, FIAT Panda or KIA Picanto. Not a Volkswagen, I don't recommend them.
