Looking to spend £8000 on a used car - should I buy a Golf?

I do approx 10,000 miles a year, mostly short trips, but the occasional long drive. I need to replace my old Renault Clio and have £8000 to spend on a hatchback. I have my heart half set on a Golf, but am not sure. What do you think?
