What's the best petrol estate?
I plan to replace my current estate with another similar to the size of a Skoda Octavia or SEAT Leon ST and at that sort of price level. The 1.2 or 1.4 TSI petrol engine looks suitable. A sunroof/panoramic roof is essential. I would have preferred a chain cam engine rather than belt cam but the Toyota Auris is the only chain cam engine I have found so far but the 1.6 Valvematic engine is significantly less economical for a lower performance.
Can you please suggest an alternative with decent longevity, reasonable comfort and good reliability that I should consider or is the Octavia or Leon ST as good as it gets?

In real life, both the old model Auris 1.6 Valvematic and the new one average 39mpg (98% of the EC figure). The Leon 1.2TSI has averaged 48.9mpg (85% of EC), the Leon 1.4TSI 46.1mpg (85% of EC), the Skoda Octavia 1.2TSI 45.3mpg (91%) and the Octavia 1.4TSI 42.9mpg (96%).
Against that, Toyotas are covered by a five year warranty and for a VAG car a ive year warranty is about £850 extra.
