What medium diesel estate could our son buy which is cheap?

My son, who is returning to the UK after seven years, needs a small to medium estate, new or nearly new which is cheap to buy and run. He would do 10,000 – 12,000 miles a year and prefers diesel, although he will probably do more shorter journeys than long. We would be grateful for your advice.

Dacia Logan MCV: £9,395 new: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/dacia/logan-mcv-2013/. Hardly exciting, but there is nothing else remotely close for value.
