Can I get compensation from Volkswagen over a clutch and flywheel failure in my Scirocco?

On 18 July I had 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco GT TDI examined by Lookers main agents in Darlington, with regard to the loss of traction/acceleration particularly in low gears at road junctions, and also a sporadic metallic grinding noise when engaging gears. They immediately diagnosed a faulty clutch and flywheel. I ordered the repair on 23 July and when I collected it, I paid their account for renewal of clutch and flywheel to the sum of £1300. The mileage was 25,688. The car was registered in November 2009 and when I bought it from Lookers in August 2010 with 9698 miles on the clock, I heard from time to time a metallic grating noise when changing gear. When the recent repair was undertaken, the engineer commented that the flywheel was badly burnt, so in my opinion it must have been under mechanical stress for a considerable length of time. Could there be a case for some financial compensation from Volkswagen?

Three years ago is too long ago to claim that the car was faulty from the day you bought it, and the burden of proof would rest on you. At least they did not load the cost of the flywheel and clutch to make it any more expensive than it should have been. Some other dealers would have charged more. Note that any legal action would have to be against the dealer who sold you the car, not Volkswagen.
