I'd like to buy a Golf, but should I go for petrol or diesel and are the DSG automatics reliable?

I want to change my 10-year-old BMW for a hatchback with automatic transmission such as the Golf or Focus. The Volkswagen dealer is trying to sell me a 2.0-litre diesel, but I would prefer the 1.4 TSI petrol. He claims that at 9000 miles per year the diesel would be the best buy. You have mentioned problems with DSGs. Are they less likely with a petrol engine? Are there any other alternatives to the above cars that would be more suitable? My wife and I are both 70 and I have a problem with my left ankle, hence the need for an automatic.

A Golf 2.0 TDI has the more robust, but high maintenance wet clutch 6-speed DSG. A Golf 1.6TDI or 1.4TSI has the less robust dry clutch 7-speed DSG. The Volkswagen dealer wants to be able to sell you a new EGR, new DPF, new timing belt as well as new DSG transmission fluid every few years.
