Which estate car do you recommend for winter driving, long journeys and good comfort?

Over many years I have averaged 50,000 miles per year and in later years in Mercedes E350 estates, both diesel and petrol. I currently have a 12-year-old Mercedes E350 Estate (petrol) and my wife has a Mercedes A-Class, 10 years old. We wish to get rid of our two cars and run one car. I feel that, living in the country, I need a car that is something like an Audi quattro to cope with winter driving. I also like to drive through France to Southern Spain, so the car needs to be comfortable and be able to handle long journeys.

I like the convenience of an estate car and I like a sunshine roof. I have driven automatics for the last 20 years and feel that as I am now approaching my 69th birthday I should continue this habit. I would appreciate your opinion of my best option(s).

In the UK, this pretty much forces you into an Audi: A4 quattro; A4 Allroad, or a Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, a Peugeot 3008 hybrid or a Subaru. BMW will soon be offering a 3 Series Touring X-drive 4WD in the UK. With the exception of the huge R-Class, Mercedes 4-matic cars are restricted to LHD.
