My Honda CR-V clutch repair may not be covered by warranty - how should I proceed?

The clutch on my 2009 Honda CR-V diesel manual is slipping, not badly but enough for me to call into Honda in Northampton. They said it may well last for a few thousand miles or could fail soon (although unlikely). I showed them my Honda-approved extended warranty, which has the wear and tear option included. However, apparently wear and tear on clutch friction plates is not included even with this option. They want to take it all apart and take photos to send to Honda to see if they will accept a claim - apparently only if a part has failed, not wear and tear on the plates.

The trouble is once they have taken it apart I would be committed to get them to do the job at their extortionate rates if Honda turned it down. They have quoted £1831 to replace the clutch and flywheel or £601 to just put it all back together again if I don't get them to do the work. What would you advise? It's done 40,000 miles, is four years old and has an extended warranty including wear and tear, and frankly I feel like I am being given seriously bad treatment.

You can tell them this is unacceptable. You will have the work done privately at your expense and if the extracted dual mass flywheel is found to be faulty you will offer it in evidence in the small claims track of the county court and will claim from whoever sold you the warranty. Not the warranty insurer, you claim from the supplier of the warranty to whom you paid the money for the warranty. A clutch would not be normally covered either under manufacturer warranty or under an extended insurer warranty.
