Which car to replace our Volkswagen Passat and Vauxhall Astra?

The passage of time has brought the wife (age 75) and me (age 78) to a point where the ease at which we can enter and leave the car is becoming paramount. I currently run a 1997 Passat 110 TDI now at 177,000 miles. My wife has a 2005 1.4 Astra. The plan is to pass to Passat onto a family member and either trade or sell the Astra for somewhere around £2000 to £2,500, add £5000 to £8000 and see what I can get. For some time now our annual mileage has dropped to 5000-7000 miles with me doing most of the driving. I have been doing some research and my interest centres around either a Mitsubishi ASX or a Mercedes B-Class in the 3-5 year bracket, petrol, up to 2.0-litre.

Not bad choices, and Mitsubishi reliability is impressive. I'd also look at a Ford C-Max, preferably a 1.8i or 2.0i petrol and one with a proper lever-operated parking brake. It's very roomy in the front seats, very easy to get in and out of and generally very pleasant to drive.
