Where can I have a Volkswagen Golf ESP fault repaired cheaply?

I have a 2007 Golf 1.4 which I've owned for around four years. Last month the ESP light showed on the dashboard and now I find that the warning brake light has also highlighted. My local mechanic has informed me this brake light is as a direct result of the ESP coming on. I have been quoted £500 to have this repaired, which I cannot afford. My mechanic has informed me that this warning light has been shown to be a common 'defect' in Golfs. Is there any information you can provide to me on this, also any advice you can give as to what you would do?

£500 is actually a reasonable cost for this very common repair. Three years ago VAG dealers were charging up to £1800 for the repair before I intervened after being contacted by various firms that do it more cheaply. The repair to the brake pressure sensor itself costs about £225, but it has to be removed from the car, refitted and the brake fluid replaced, which is why you have been quoted £500.
