Which car for our 17-year-old, 6-feet tall son to learn to drive in?

I have a bit of a dilemma that I hope you may be able to help with. My son is 17 and just learning to drive. We want to buy a car to replace my Nissan Almera so that he can learn to drive, and after passing his test, be a named driver on my policy. I will be the main driver. From an insurance perspective we are looking at 1-litre cars to keep the insurance costs down. The problem is that he is 6-feet 3-inches tall, and a strapping 17-stone rugby player with size 14 feet. We have tried to fit him in the Nissan, and our Freelander, and his knees are up around the steering wheel. His feet are too big for cars with small pedals. What car would you recommend which is low insurance but would allow him to sit and drive safely and comfortably, possibly something in which the drivers seat can be raised or lowered. I hope you may be able to assist.

I answered this same question for someone else today. I know a guy who is 6-feet 8-inches and can drive a Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1, which are low insurance and low running costs. Obviously unwelted, soft driving moccasins rather than welted clodhoppers will help him manage the pedals.

I'm tall and have a bad back. I need an automatic vehicle that has easy access and is comfortable. My annual mileage is approximately 3000. What do you advise?
