Which comfortable, economical car for long distance commuting?

I'm about to start a 500 miles per week weekly commute in my new role and need to make a choice on company car to fit several needs. With this mileage and cost of fuel it's got to be economical. I have two young children and a small dog, so would like a bit of space for family days out along with comfort on the commute. I'm 6-foot tall and have a less than perfect hip, having had an operation two years back.

I believe my budget will afford me a car touching £28,000 purchase price. My wife, more than me, wants it to still be stylish as we are in our early 30s and she thinks my taste is a little beyond my years. What do you recommend?

BMW 320dED. It does 140mph, 0-60 in 7.8 seconds and mine has averaged 64mpg over 6000 miles. And no DPF problems.
