50p tyre wear?

My 2011 A1 TDi recently had a service. I have been advised that the tyres are wearing like a 50 pence piece. What could be the reason for this?

If it's the rear tyres, a problem with the brake pressure regulator not working properly, resulting in the rear brakes locking up very slightly.
