How can I improve the ride quality on my Golf Estate?

I have just bought a new Volkswagen Golf Estate 1.4GT with standard 17-inch wheels. I ordered the GT over the SE as I thought it had the ACT engine - it doesn't and I’m still waiting for an explanation from the dealer.

I appreciate the suspension would be stiffer than the SE, but I’ve found the car to ride very hard - much worse than my previous Audi A4 with 18-inch wheels. Do you have any suggestions on improving this?

I guess your Volkswagen Golf will have the standard twist beam rear suspension rather than the multi-link, which gives a much better ride. And the estate will have stiffer springs for load carrying. Not really a lot you can do except try lowering the tyre pressures slightly.

If the rear tyres are pumped up to something like 40PSI for load carrying, then letting them down to around 32 should make a huge difference (as long as you're not carrying a load).
