Heater failure on Ford Fusion - what's the cause?

The heater seems to have packed up on my Ford Fusion. All I get is cold air through the air vents, even when the dial is on the hottest setting. Any ideas?

Quite common. The electric valve in the pipes between the engine and the heater matrix fails.
