Buying used 4x4 for £12k - what would you recommend?

I currently own a Saab 9-5 and I am looking to replace it with a 4x4 for country roads, bad weather, steep hills and a largish boot for a dog. What would you recommend for £12,000?

2006-2009 Honda CR-V 2.2i CTDI probably best.

I want to replace my 2002 Honda CR-V petrol with the newer model. Should I go with petrol or diesel? I would buy a 2008/9 with 100k miles and would do about 10k miles/ year.
We're looking to buy our first SUV, what would you suggest for under £10k? We'll do approx 8000 miles per year, reliability, economical a must, just concerned about DPF or EGF valve failure.

Low-down pull from refined chain cam engines. Walk-through cabin on CVT auto models. Large boot can be increased by sliding the rear seats forward. Lasting very well.
Roomy and versatile. Very comfortable, pleasant and relaxing to drive. not at all cumbersome. 2.2 i-CTDI diesel is excellent.
