How do you store tyres in the winter?

Please advise how to best store wheels with winter or all season tyres when not on vehicle as I am not sure I will have enough suitable space. Or alternatively, if I opt for All Season tyres can I safely leave them on the vehicle throughout the year?

I pile them up on their sides, off the ground in a dark, dry store.
