Buying a car for £2500 - which is best?

I have a budget of £2500 to buy a pre-march 2001 car for the tax break. I would want a medium to large car with four seats and automatic gearbox. I’m thinking of a Lexus GS300, Volvo V70 or Jaguar XJ. What would you recommend?

The Lexus is likely to be the most reliable on your list. You could also consider a BMW 5-Series. Plenty of Jaguar S-Types in this price bracket, but the 4-speed autobox isn't brilliant. Avoid potentially rusty Mercedes.
