How reliable is the Audi A4?

I am thinking of buying an Audi A4 3.0 TDI auto, but have been told that there have been terrible problems with Audi auto gearboxes and that the trade won't touch them. Is this true?

It depends which one. Multitronic CVTs can be trouble, but torque converter autos on quattros are okay. Quattro Haldex clutches need three yearly fluid replacements, though.
