Mazda CX-5 - 2WD or AWD?

We are looking to replace our family car with a compact SUV for school runs and holidays. We like the space and efficiency of the Mazda CX-5, and the Sport Nav 2.2d model seems to be well equipped; however, we cannot decide between the 2WD and AWD model. Should we go for a 2WD and maybe invest in a spare set of rims with winter tyres, or plump for the AWD?

In very slippery conditions (freezing rain on the launch in Austria) the 2WD was very prone to wheelspin. In summer conditions it's fine, especially the Sport on 19-inch" wheels and handles unbelievably well for an SUV. If you expect snow then 2WD all weather or cold weather tyres essential. 4WD with all weather or cold weather tyres even better.
