My wife's buying me a car - should I go for a Ford Mondeo or Mazda 6?

As a graduation present my wife is buying me a nearly-new car in the next eight weeks. I currently drive a 2001 Ford Mondeo 1.8 Zetec (petrol, 125,000 miles) and am looking at similar sized cars. I have narrowed it down to either another Mondeo or a Mazda 6. I'm looking at 2008 or newer cars and have a budget of around £10,000, plus anything I can get for my Mondeo. Which would you recommend? Can I get one for my budget and where from? Would you recommend part-ex or trying to sell privately for my Mondeo? Also if I wait until Sept when the new registration comes out, will there be more choice available due to others trading in?

We'd suggest the Mondeo out of those two but they are both so good, you won't be disappointed with either. You can certainly get a good example for your budget and there's no shortage of Mondeos or Mazda 6s on the secondhand market. Your best place to look is either Ford/Mazda garages or car supermarkets. Part-exchanging your Mondeo is less hassle than selling privately and you will get less, but if you're buying something relatively new it often makes sense as you don't need to worry about advertising it, doing all the paperwork and then possibly having a period with no car (or indeed two cars...). You can wait until September when prices will come down slightly but the Mondeo and Mazda 6 are such popular cars there's unlikely to be much difference in choice whether you buy one now or wait.
