Can you recommend a reliable medium sized car for £5k?

I have £5000 to spend on a used vehicle, but don’t have much experience of car buying and have no idea where to start. I want something comfortable, economic and reliable, what can you recommend?

Up to 5k a reasonably safe bet is a Mazda 3 1.6 4-speed auto.
