Can you recommend a car with better economy and lower tax than our Renault Laguna 150dCi?

We have a Renault Laguna 150dCi as we currently do some long journeys in Europe. This will cease soon and we want something else with lower tax, better economy, lower insurance, and suitable for normal journeys up to 100 miles. I fancy an Audi A3, but my wife thinks a Clio would be better.

You'll really feel the difference between the Clio on long trips, and I'm not sure that you'll have enough luggage room for longer European drives. There are a number of SEAT Leon, Volkswagen Golf, Volvo V50, BMW 3 Series, Audi A3, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astras that are either nothing to tax or just £35. Details can be found here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tax/

Alternatively, this may suit your needs. We've driven the SEAT Ibiza ST (an estate) and it may have the mix of space/economy/low running costs that you're looking for: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/seat/ibiza-st
