Can I have metal registration plates?

Very recently in the Daily Telegraph I seem to recall that you answered a letter regarding metal registration plates causing MoT failures?
I have just taken delivery of a 1978 Honda CB400F2 (400/4 Supersport), as a summer project. The bike is fitted with the original metal plates, and I want to keep the bike, as much as possible, in original condition.

I can't remember the advice you gave at the time. Any chance you could give me your thoughts on this?

If they are the original plates and are not corroded then they are legal.
