Why has my Toyota IQ developed a clutch fault at 12,000 miles?

I bought a Toyota IQ 1.0-litre manual in June 2009 and overall I am delighted with it. Unfortunately, right from the start, I had difficulty changing from first to second gear. Eventually the local Toyota garage put in a new clutch cable which almost fixed the problem, but not quite, and I was told to drive it for a while and see if it improved. It didn't so I queried it again and finally, at my two-year service, was told it was perfectly ok.

It bothered me that it wasn't right so recently, with the end of my three-year warranty only three months away, I went back for another check. This time I was told the clutch bite point was set too high and consequently the clutch was now worn (after only 12,000 miles) and needed to be replaced. They have now changed the clutch free of charge and also replaced the whole carpet FoC as it had worn completely away under my clutch heel.

The IQ has the same engine and transmission as the Aygo, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107, and they also have been having a lot of clutch trouble at just over three years old (later models have a bigger, stronger clutch). That's probably why Toyota fixed it. Toyota is generally very good about putting its hands up when there is a problem.
