What is your opinion on using winter tyres?
In your column today, you recommended, again, fitting winter tyres. However, Chris Knapman's article later in the Motoring section offered a different point of view. They cost money to fit, and to refit the summer tyres in due course, and when the weather is not cold enough, they lose performance and degrade quicker, wasting more money. Given that in the South East, at any rate, the few days of snow we had at the end of 2011 were the first days of snow this century, and nearly all the winters have been generally mild, there seems to be little point in buying them. When I tried these arguments on the Service Manager at my local garage, he agreed that winter tyres are a waste of money. I would be interested to read your comments on Chris Knapman's article.

I cannot predict the weather. Can you? Can the BBC? We were actually preconditioned to expect the coldest winter for 50 years. Your statement, "Given that in the South East, at any rate, the few days of snow we had at the end of 2011 were the first days of snow this century" is complete codswallop. I enclose a couple of road test photos of cars tested in 2010 and 2009 covered in snow that completely refutes this. Because I did not have winter tyres last year I was unable to visit my parents in December until the snow subsided. In fact, is you buy yourself a separate set of wheels your only additional cost is that set of wheels because you would be wearing tyres anyway, whether they were winter tyres or summer tyres.
