Why has my Audi A4's fuel tank contracted?

I have just had my Audi A4 serviced and the mechanic tells me that the diesel tank is curved inwards on the bottom underside as if it has been sucked in. Is this a common fault? What could have caused it? And what is the best course of action?

I've never heard of this before, but it would be caused by a blocked fuel tank breather, preventing air entering the tank as fuel was pumped out thus causing the tank to implode. It's more important to fix the breather than to replace the tank.
