I am currently running a petrol-engined Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16V Club purchased new on 30-6-2001. This has been serviced by an independent garage every 6 months and apart from normal wear and tear to tyres, bulbs, brake linings etc. it has been trouble free for all of its 59,000 miles. I am interested in purchasing a newish 2012/12 Astra and would appreciate your advice on suitability and reliability of models on offer and what price I can expect for my reliable old motor.

The nicest current model Astra is the 1.4T 140PS, as tested here: honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/vauxhall/vauxhall-astra-2010-road-test// I'm afraid that while your 2001 Astra would be an excellent buy for someone, given its impeccable service history, it's only worth buttons. Trades at £490, but you might get £795 for it from a photocard in a newsagent's window.
