I need to run my BMW 330d Convertible right through this coming winter so I decided to fit winter tyres. I chose the BMW approved Goodyear Eagle UG GW3-RSCs on 17-inch rims to replace the original Bridgestone run-flats on 19-inch rims. I got the full set of tyres and alloys for £1,500 fitted, from my local BMW dealer, which seems competitive for premium quality goods. My insurer accepted the “modification” with no problem.
Apart from the safety factor the ride improvement is phenomenal. I no longer have to actively avoid larger potholes, of which there is no shortage in Gloucestershire. The car doesn’t look so racy and one has to exercise relative restraint in cornering but for everyday driving the extra inch or so of sidewall flexibility has transformed the driving pleasure of the car on UK roads. I shall be tempted to stick to the 17-inch wheels all year round.

This is why I recommend switching to smaller diameter rims for the winter tyres. At a much lower level it's the same with my FIAT 500. Ride is improved on the 175/65 R14 Michelin Alpins over the 185/55 R15 Energy Savers. Grabbing a break in the weather I put them on the FIAT on 5th November.
