12 months ago I purchased a 12-month old Ford Kuga 2.0TDCI 163 SUV. This was a replacement for a LandRover Discovery Td5 auto and in general I am very pleased with the vehicle. It is comfortable, quiet and tows the caravan well. But the fuel consumption has concerned me from the start. Driving locally in Cheshire, typically journeys of between 5 and 10 miles, I can achieve around 37/38 mpg on standard Shell Fuelsave diesel. I make regular trips to Cornwall using M6, M5, A30 and on this journey, cruising at just under 70mph the best I can get is 39/40 mpg. This compares with 37/38 mpg and 48/50 mpg under the same conditions for a Ford C-Max 1.8TDCI. I accept that the Kuga is a bigger heavier car but the lack of improvement on a motorway journey is not logical. Recently, having read the advice in your column, I decided to try Shell Super V-Power diesel. On local journeys the fuel consumption improved to almost 43 mpg. I eagerly tried a motorway journey and achieved 39 mpg, again cruising at under 70. This was repeated on the return journey for the first 200 miles. After this in frustration I increased my speed and cruising to between 70 and 75 mph the economy improved to 41mpg. I am sure that Ford has got this one seriously wrong but do not know who to turn to as all senior management at the company seem to be shielded from annoying members of the public like me. Do you have any suggestions?
