Can I trust Fiat's 'Call Fiat First' accident management scheme?

As a fellow owner of a Fiat 500 you may have received a copy of the "Call Fiat First" booklet from your Fiat dealer. This asks you to call 0844 209 2583 number in case of accident or theft of the car. Fiat states that you should call this number before calling your insurance company. In view of the problems motorists have with accident management companies and ambulance chasing lawyers, is this service on the level? Is it really run by Fiat for the benefit of Fiat customers and should I use the service if I do have an accident?

All manufacturers now seem to be offering this service on the promise that it ensures that the cars are repaired to a retail standard, thus maintaining their value, which often does not happen with a standard insurance repair. That makes total sense to me. The problem only comes with who the manufacturer has contracted to manage the repair, because if they put you into a credit hire car you can then suffer all the problems inflicted by accident management and credit hire outfits that delay the repair, put you in an excessively expensive hire car, and leave you liable for the bill for it if the other party's insurer does not pay.
