Drone coming from the front of my Audi A4 - what could it be?

Here's a tricky one. My 94,000 mile 2004 Audi A4 Cabriolet 1.8 turbo petrol has developed a road speed related 'hum' or 'droning' sound which is audible above 30mph and which appears to come from the front of the vehicle. I thought it might be a wheel bearing but my local dealer couldn't diagnose it in the workshop and suggested I run it a little longer to see if it got louder. Any ideas what the problem may be?

It’s most likely to be a wheel bearing, but noise from them is frustratingly difficult to pinpoint.

Update: MC later wrote, "You were absolutely spot-on. A faulty wheel bearing front left-hand side, duly sorted by an excellent independent Volkswagen/Audi garage, The General Motor Company, Hazel Grove, Stockport, Cheshire."
