Did diesel freeze cause my Volvo V50 to lose power?

Setting off after parking my Volvo V50 1.6D DRIVe overnight in temperatures down to -16 degrees C, the car kangaroo jumped for a couple of minutes with the engine appearing to be cutting out. When joining the motorway after a drive of only about 500 meters I found the engine lacked any power, even with the accelerator to the floor, only managing 40mph uphill and 60mph down. I limped on and came off at the first junction after a drive of about 15 miles, parking up for about half an hour. Before calling the breakdown service I thought I would give the car a test round the car park and found it was now behaving properly, so continued my journey with no further problem. Could I have been suffering diesel freeze? If so how can I prevent it happening again, garaging the car not being an option, and could any damage have been done to the engine?

What this means is that the diesel waxes into globules and blocks the fuel filter. Winter diesel is supposed to have anti waxing additive, but it's impossible to predict at -16 degrees C, so the diesel in your tank probably did not have enough. You can buy additional anti-waxing additive from fuel stations.
