Why did you recommend the Skoda Yeti which has a gearbox problem?

Why do you write so positively about VAG cars in your road tests? I’ve just read the Skoda Yeti test. You mention the 2.0 TDi. Quote from a Volkswagen main dealer: "it's the worst engine we've made", based on the level of warranty repairs. The gearbox issue is significant; it was designed for earlier, lower powered engines and arguably can't cope adequately with modern engines, especially those with higher torque ratings (like diesels). You can now buy aftermarket modified boxes that have had the rivets replaced with SS bolts. Maybe it's time VAG did something about it? In the meanwhile, would you buy one?

A road test is almost always positive because it’s almost always of a brand new car. If you want the dirt, check a car-by-car breakdown that compiles the information from owners and drivers over the years. I never recommended the Yeti 2.0TDI. I didn't even test it. However, the transmission is protected by a dual mass flywheel. I admit, I did recommend the Yeti 1.8TSI 4WD. Check the car-by-car entries at HJUK for the true picture.
