Car for my son for about £6,000

My son has about £6000 to spend. He does about 8 to 10,000 miles pa.

He wants a medium (e.g.Focus) sized car for commuting and pleasure. His priorities are reliablity and economy, although being a 30 year old lad he does try for something a little different, e.g not a Focus!

Have you any suggestions? He wondered about a V50 petrol, but I didn't think that would be especially economical.

A V50 1.8 petrol has a useful chain cam 125PS Mazda engine. Not particularly economical, but generally very reliable.
