Overreving old Focus

I have a W reg 1.8 Ghia which has suddenly started overrevving - to 4,500 rpm.

It is intermittent but getting worse and therefore no engine braking is available. I have disconnected battery to reset ECU and warmed up appropriately, which sorted the issue for one day, then the problem came back a little the next day, then extremely seriously the following day.

I am doing a 9-10 mile journey each way and need car to get to hospital and back. AA suggested it needed a new idle control valve. Any ideas please as I am putting the car into the garage on Thursday and want to go in with some idea of what to expect?

Well it could very well be the IAC (idle air control)valve, but would suggest that the throttle valve linkage is also checked to see if it is sticking.#

One other thing could be the TP (throttle position) sensor.
