Brake pad wear on a Nissan Micra

Bought my car in April 2008 - new. Always serviced by main dealer. Services in March 2009 and 2010 were fine. 2011 they said brake pads needed renewing, so I gave the go ahead. Same thing in 2012!

I am concerned I am being ripped off on this. If brake pads can last three years before first renewal, why should they suddenly need to be renewed every subsequent year? I would appreciate your advices as this year's service is not too far ahead.

Might be because the discs themselves have become worn and grooved and are wearing the pads more quickly. But if that's the case they would have recommended new discs as well as pads.
