Trading-In - what if the dealer misses a problem?

If a dealer is given the chance to test drive an old trade-in, and does not ask specifically whether there are any problems with it, does he have any legal recourse against the seller if it is subsequently found to have an expensive, intermittent fault?

Is a used car dealer expected to take the hit, whereas the private buyer of the newer vehicle is legally-protected against major faults for six months after purchase?
