An £8000 Astra...

I'm planning to buy a used car with max budget £8000, and my usage would be weekends in London and occasional long drive once in two months. Is a Vauxhall Astra [1.4i 16v VVT (100PS), Manual 5-speed, 129 CO2/kg] petrol a good option? Or any other similar alternatives?

I'm looking for comfortable car with cheaper running & maintenance cost; Not much worried about performance.

Not a very nice engine. 1.4T 140 vastly better.
