Recommendation for a not-too-large 4x4

I have a 10-Plate Volkswagen Golf TDI. It's excellent, but as I am in the country, I am thinking of trading it in for a 4x4. But I don't want a huge Chelsea tractor. Something about Golf size would be ideal, but I don't know where to start, and would be grateful for help.

(My car has done just under 7000 miles so ought to get good trade in price)
